Burial Orrin O. Carpenter Jr. was killed from a gunshot wound on June 14th, 1944, in the 29th Combat Area. Carpenter was buried in La Cambe Cemetery in Isigny, France, at Plot A, Row 8, Grave 154. His casket was disinterred on November 25th, 1947, andtransferred to the Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, at the Normandy American Cemetery Plot I, Row 1, Grave 6.
Correspondence His mother was first notified of his death, before his father took over government correspondence. His personal effects were mailed to his father. The items are mostly clothes but did include a pair of cuff links, stationary, a moisture damaged footlocker with a lock, and check for $3.73. In April of 1946, Dorothy Carpenter sent a letter to the office of the Quarter Master General requesting all available information pertaining to Orrin’s grave.
Honors and Award The Biloxi Daily Herald honored his death with his name listed on the Army Honor page. Orrin O. Carpenter Jr. was awarded the Purple Heart Award for his sacrifice.
